Following is an excerpt from my new book, “How To Buy A House: Pre-Owned and Foreclosures”.
Realtor.com and Zillow.com: They’re in it for the Ads
Realtor.com is ostensibly the public’s way of seeing the live MLS without actually contacting a Realtor. While it is one of the better home search sites, there’s still some things you need to know about it.
The name “Realtor.com” is owned by the National Association of Realtors, but the actual site is powered by an advertising company called Move Inc. Move Inc.’s job is to sell ads to Realtors: That’s where they make their money. Selling ads to Realtors is the same driving force behind Zillow as well.
The upshot is that if you just put in a general search for, say, “St. Augustine Beach, Florida,” you’re going to get a pretty random set of homes, some that might not even be in St. Augustine Beach; the homes that show up first are ad supported.
We’ll take a look at how to search Realtor and Zillow in my next post…
